February is a busy time of the year for gardeners. It’s not quite time to get carried away with planting and sowing seeds, as there is still a small chance of a frost. However, February is the time to get everything ready, so when the time is right you can concentrate on bringing new life into your garden. It’s a good time to check borders and divide perennials which have become much too big. Provided there is no snow and the soil isn’t water-logged, that is. Drag the lawnmower out of the shed, and give your lawn its first haircut for the year. Cut it just enough to take off the top of any long spiky grass. If there are any leaves left lying around in the garden this will be a good time to rake them up. With spring just around the corner, you should take this last opportunity to tidy up and cut your hedges. Before the birds start looking for somewhere to build their nests. There is going to be a lot of compostable material being created over the month, so take the time to tidy and turn your compost heaps. Spruce up any wooden features and garden furniture with a quick rub down and a lick of paint or wood preserver.
